Michael Looney believes strong communities do not happen by accident. They are built by people who care deeply about where they live and who are willing to invest their time, energy, and leadership to help their community grow and thrive.
As Vice President of Economic Development for the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Michael has spent more than a decade helping strengthen the economic future of San Angelo. Since 2014, his work has focused on building the industrial base of the community and supporting opportunities that allow San Angelo to continue moving forward while preserving the character that makes it special.
Michael often speaks about the responsibility citizens have in shaping the future of their community. He believes San Angelo is unique because people here understand that the future of the community must be charted together. Organizations, volunteers, and neighbors working side by side are what create a culture of care that allows a community to flourish.
Being named a Meals For The Elderly Community Champion is especially meaningful to Michael because of the legacy of the organization and the people it serves. He recognizes that the seniors served through Meals For The Elderly are the generation whose hard work built the community we enjoy today.
Michael’s commitment to service extends beyond his professional role. He has served on several community organizations including the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the San Angelo Rotary Club, and the East Concho Volunteer Fire Department. Service through the fire department is also a meaningful part of his family’s life and story.
A guiding principle for Michael’s service is a simple but powerful motto:
“It’s about them.”
For him, volunteer service is not about recognition or personal accomplishment. It is about filling real needs in the community and supporting those who need help the most.
Michael and his wife Shawndee, a licensed massage therapist, have been married for eight years and are raising their six year old daughter, Elona. As a family, they share a heart for service and enjoy finding ways to give back to the community they call home.
As part of the Meals For The Elderly Community Champions program, Michael will participate in a ride along with one of our volunteer delivery routes during March for Meals. This experience allows champions to see firsthand the impact of a daily meal delivery and the personal connections that mean so much to the seniors we serve.
Meals For The Elderly is grateful to Michael for his leadership, his commitment to service, and for serving as an ambassador for our mission of neighbors helping neighbors.
